About the album

All of the songs and music for this project were produced with portable and hand held synthesizers. There has been a huge expansion of small companies producing such devices over the last ten years and it has been an exciting time for music engineering. Many of these devices are very reasonably priced and can form the basis of an entire gig. They come packed with enough content to create drum patterns, synth sounds, loops and samples.

Martin Christie's interest in these portable methods of instrumentation led him to start the all Electronic Music Open Mic (EMOM) movement to find out more about how people were using these new instruments and what sounds were being created. He wrote the book ‘Electronic Music Travels’ which describes his experiences at these nights.

This album may be viewed as a compilation album of different music technologies at a specific point in time. The album and the poetry book complement each other with the inclusion of randomised words and sounds. Many of the tracks are also peppered with reverse spoken word. The intention is for the tracks to feel like they have come from different contexts and even different artists. This is due to the variation in technology used.

In addition to the technological differences across the album each and every track is the result of variable song writing processes. Some tracks are pre-Covid and others were created during the long lockdown. Quiet moments found in the worst of all contexts to make music and be creative.

The tracks on this album may often be short pieces created with various pocket synths but they are all designed to have depth and meaning for the listener. Each song on the album includes an explanation of the music technology involved. Added to this there is information on the meaning and background of the tracks. All of this is intended to paint a picture of The Vague Plague and other machinations.
